Women, who often disproportionately suffer from hunger and malnutrition, hold a unique and untapped potential in addressing global hunger.  

As emphasized by Opportunity International, investing in women, especially female farmers, is integral to making significant strides towards achieving sustainable development goals. 

💪The Impact of Gender Equality on Food Security 

Scholars assert that gender equality can substantially contribute to a country’s economic growth, with a pivotal role in determining food security.  

A cross-country study revealed that 43 percent of the reduction in hunger was attributable to progress in women’s education—nearly as much as the combined effect of increased food availability and improvements to the health environment. 

🌾Unlocking Potential Through Investment 

By giving women farmers the necessary resources to establish and grow their farms, the global community could potentially reduce the number of hungry people in the world by 100-150 million.  

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN emphasizes that if women had the same access to productive resources as men, they could increase yields on their farms by 20-30 percent, leading to a 12-17 percent reduction in global hunger.

Opportunity International rightly highlights that connecting women farmers to the broader agricultural economy is an enormous opportunity in the movement to end hunger and malnutrition.
