Since 2018, Shelter for Life has partnered with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to foster connections among infrastructure, finance and farms in the West African Cashew industry of Senegal, The Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau. 

By implementing Good Agricultural Practices and Climate Smart Agriculture West African Cashew Farmers have enhanced productivity. These practices have revitalized aging and overplanted orchards and have included the establishment and development of community based, commercially operated cashew nurseries. 

Through Shelter For Life’s partnership with USDA we have been able to establish numerous community-based, commercially operated cashew nurseries, many of which are owned and operated by women, throughout Senegal, The Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau. The nurseries ensure improved varieties are provided to the cashew farms of all three countries. 

Shelter For Life and USDA have partnered up to replant thousands of acres of land with cashew trees keeping Climate Smart Agricultural in mind. The trees not only support the community, but they also protect against climate change.
