Shelter For Life’s project in southern Senegal is building and rehabilitating 130 kilometers (81 miles) of durable roads between rich agricultural areas and a major national highway. Over 1,900 cash-for-work laborers have been hired (26% of them women) to clear land for the roads and dig roadside drainage ditches.
The new roads, which can accommodate heavy transport vehicles, are enabling farmers to get their harvested products to market much more efficiently, and are helping to increase the income of farmers and traders.
These photos show a narrow, unimproved road, then a wide, completed road, and a group of cash-for-work laborers.
